Kenny Celebrates "Down the Road"

Kenny Chesney celebrated the success of his No. 1 hit "Down the Road" with songwriter Mac McAnally at a party at Nashville's ASCAP building, March 9.

Kenny noted before the party that he had loved the song, which Mac wrote for his own Simple Life album, for several years. "The one thing I always liked about it is that it crosses so many generations," Kenny explained. "So many people can relate to it." Mac appears on the single with Kenny and the two scored an ACM Award nomination for Vocal Event of the Year. "The idea that Mac would sing this song with me was gift enough," Kenny noted. "He came up, went in the studio and it just came together." Toward the end of the celebration, Mac surprised Kenny with a special and touching gift -- his trusty Martin guitar on which he wrote "Down the Road" and many of his other hits. "For him to give it to me," said an obviously moved Kenny, "as if the songs I've been fortunate to get weren't enough, well, that may be one of the single greatest gifts anyone has ever given me."
