Kellie Pickler Signs On for a “Hunger-Free Summer”

Download a free activity book on Facebook to help Kellie beat childhood hunger.

Kellie Pickler is helping to beat child hunger this summer as part of the Hunger-Free Summer campaign, thanks to a partnership with ConAgra Foods Foundation, Feeding America and Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. The summer food program is essential to many children across the country who do not have access to healthy food year-round. “I think a lot of people don’t realize that during the school semesters, [schoolchildren] are guaranteed at least breakfast and lunch at school,” Kellie tells CountryWeekly.com. “Lord only knows what they go home to, but they may not get anything to eat. During the summer, that’s a pretty [lengthy] window of time of not being guaranteed a meal. What a stress and a worry for a child to have. No child should ever have to worry about that.”

Kellie is helping to spread the word about a fast, fun and free way that people can help. As part of the campaign, the sponsors are offering a free downloadable activity booklet, The Hunger Avengers, that gives families an option for donating a meal to Feeding America, while also teaching their children about hunger. The activity booklet can be downloaded from the ConAgra Foods, Inc. Facebook page. For every book downloaded from June 26 through Sept. 3, the ConAgra Foods Foundation will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America, up to 500,000 meals this summer. If you choose to share the link on your own personal Facebook news feed, the foundation matches that with an additional meal for a child.

“You can be part of something so beautiful and special just by logging on to your Facebook page,” says Kellie. “That’s a big deal. Most everyone who has Facebook gets on it every day anyway, so hopefully people will do this, because it’s a really easy and fun way to help children. You may not be able to give money, but if you can donate two minutes of your time, it can make a big difference. We can shine a light and provide meals for hungry kids.”

The bonus? “You can download the book for your kids and it will keep them entertained for, you know, a good 10 or 20 minutes, which makes a big difference in summer, too!” she says.
