Kacey Musgraves’ Six CMA Nominations: “I Can’t Wrap My Brain Around That”

“I think people must be ready for unabashed, relatable songs,” she says.

New country artists don't usually tour Europe—and they don't get six nominations for CMA awards right out of the chute.

But Kacey Musgraves clearly is no usual country artist. After all, her current single, “Follow Your Arrow,” says yes to rights for same-sex relationships and smoking marijuana. And she covered Weezer and Bob Marley while playing a recent show in London, as she did during her Bonnaroo set this past June.

Still, six CMA nominations?

“I can’t wrap my brain around that,” she tells the London Evening Standard.

“They tell me that no debut female has ever had that many nominations,” Kacey said. “I think people must be ready for unabashed, relatable songs.”
