Jon Pardi calls it a “fixation”—his obsessive love of the rhinestone-encrusted and silk-embroidered Manuel jackets made popular by Johnny Cash, Little Jimmy Dickens, Porter Wagoner, Marty Stuart and others. But that’s not who Jon credits for his fascination with the designer, who has a great presence in Jon’s new video for “What I Can’t Put Down.”

“The Manuel fixation came from Dwight Yoakam,” he tells Country Weekly. “He didn’t have them on, but his band had them on and they looked so cool. I started looking into it. And you go to Manuel’s shop and he has pictures of Elvis and Buck Owens and Joe Perry from Aerosmith in his designs.”

And it wasn’t just the retro-looking Manuel jackets and shirts he and his band rock in the video. Jon did up his do, too. “We had the hair rocking in this video,” he says, laughing. “It’s kind of Elvis, Johnny Cash old-school style and so was the classic microphone and everyone in black.”

One thing that isn’t old school is production in his new video. Read more about it in the May 19 issue of Country Weekly, on stands now.
