John Rich: “Second Place Sucks, Clay. It sucks!”

Clay’s off-camera reaction: “Maybe I just need to tell him to shut up.”

John Rich proved he’s as sassy as ever when he returned to Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice show in the episode that aired Sunday night (May 6).

John, who won last season, returned with actress Marlee Matlin to interview this season's final four contestants. And John gave Clay a hard time about finishing as runner-up to Ruben Studdard when Clay was on American Idol in 2003.

“When it comes down to the final two, is Clay Aiken willing to buck everyone’s perception of Clay Aiken?” John asked on the air. “Because second place sucks.”

Clay tried unsuccessfully to answer: “Let me talk, dog,” he urged John.

But John kept going. “Second place sucks, Clay. It sucks!”

Clay’s response? “Trust me, I’ve been there. I know.”

Afterward, Clay told ABC News Radio that he got frustrated with John.

“He wasn’t letting me speak. So I finally thought, you know what, maybe I just need to tell him to shut up. Maybe that’s what he’s looking for. So I didn’t say, ‘Shut up.’ But I said, ‘Let me talk!’”

Despite the exchange, Clay moved to the final three, with former late-night talk-show host Arsenio Hall and pop singer Aubrey O’Day.
