Jay DeMarcus Shuns Flatts Mates’ Advice

New dad Jay reflects on first child and Opry induction.

Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus became a dad for the first time when daughter Madeline was born to him and wife Allison last December.

Jay shared his thoughts on fatherhood and the group’s induction to the Grand Ole Opry with CountryWeekly.com backstage at the Grand Ole Opry before the induction ceremony Saturday (Oct. 8). “Everything is going great with our daughter,” Jay noted.

Asked if he had listened to any parenting advice from Flatts mates Gary LeVox and Joe Don Rooney, who both have children, Jay smiled and cracked, “No, I haven’t taken one thing they’ve told me. I do just the opposite of what they say.”

Turning serious, Jay noted, "Really, it's been great watching Gary be an awesome father to his girls. And Joe Don first became a father a few short years ago and it's been neat to see that side of him."

With another smile, Jay added, “Actually, it’s still hard to believe Joe Don having kids, because I’ve always considered him a kid. He still looks like one.”

The group's Grand Ole Opry induction capped a memorable year for Jay. “During the past year, my daughter came into this world and we were asked to join the Grand Ole Opry,” Jay said. “That will be a great memory.”
