GEORGE STRAIT ROPING EVENT WRAPS UP

Last weekend concluded the George Strait Team Roping Classic at the Rose Palace in San Antonio, with an estimated 650 teams coming out to compete for more than $300,000 in cash and prizes.

George and his son Bubba participated in the event, almost making the top 50, but the big winners were Turtle Powell and Kirt Jones, winning almost $50,000 cash plus a Chevy truck with a horse trailer each.

The George Strait Team Roping Classic has been in existence for 20 years now, but according to Bubba, they didn't know how long it would continue at first.

"For the first two or three years we'd say, 'Well, should we do it again?' And we always would," says Bubba. "Now, with the help of all our sponsors and the word of mouth from the ropers, it's huge."

And the word of mouth from the ropers is positive. Winner Turtle Powell declares: "There are other big ones, but they don't give away trucks and trailers like this. I still can't believe I won it!"
