Gary LeVox: Group’s New Album Is “Outside the Rascal Flatts Box”

Band previews new single “Rewind” in Nashville.

Rascal Flatts has been undergoing a sort of creative rebirth for its upcoming new album, which doesn’t have an official release date but will be the group’s first since 2012’s Changed.“[We] went outside the Rascal Flatts box and took some chances,” hinted Gary LeVox at a press conference today (Jan. 8) to unveil the guys’ new single, “Rewind.”Rather than work with their usual lineup of trusty songwriting friends, RF listened to as much as they could and worked with different producers for the process, including band member Jay DeMarcus. And though “Rewind” was penned by the hyper-successful trio of Ashley Gorley, Eric Paslay and Chris DeStefano, Jay noted that he prefers to listen without knowing who wrote the song.“I don’t enjoy listening with a particular bias in mind,” he said. “I like to listen to the song and find out later who wrote it. I quite honestly don’t care who writes it as long as it’s a hit song. That’s what moves me first.”“Rewind,” which was released to radio this week, has elements of the material that made the trio so successful but points to their future. “We felt like it was a good way to bridge the gap between familiar Rascal Rlatts and a new era of Rascal Flatts,” said Jay. “It’s certainly hard after 13 years to try to figure out a way to reinvent a wheel. We do what we do and Rascal Flatts is known for its harmonies and its sound, and, hopefully for good quality songs. We wanted to find the kind of songs that embodied what we wanted to say as an artist but also took us into a new generation of listeners.”Flatts fans have even more cause for excitement, as the guys are planning to hit the road with their new music, and they’ll be bringing Sheryl Crow along with them. Stay tuned for dates.
