Garth made the announcement to radio programmers and industry consultants at a Nashville press conference. Garth’s Pearl Records imprint label will be releasing The Ultimate Hits package, which includes a three-record collection of 30 classics, three new tracks and one bonus song, plus a DVD featuring 34 music videos, Nov. 6. The collection’s first single, “More Than a Memory,” will be launched to radio digitally on Aug. 27. Unlike his past several projects, which were available only through Wal-Mart stores, The Ultimate Hits will be sold at numerous retail outlets. When asked if he had any concerns about competing in today’s market, Garth, who retired from the business in 2000, responded, “I’m scared to death. It’s rusty, and I’m seeing these young guys that are out there slammin’ it every day and thinking, ‘I know what that speed is. Am I ready to run at that speed?’ I don’t know.” Garth also maintained that he is committed to staying retired until his daughters have all finished school, around the year 2015. So, he will not tour to support the new collection, although he will play some special shows, including an already-announced Wal-Mart Appreciation Concert.
