During an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that aired on Wednesday (Feb. 15), Dierks Bentley surprised a military family with a $50,000 check. The money is intended to help Sgt. Chad Sparks and his wife through recent financial hardships. The couple had resorted to selling items on Craigslist in order to help make ends meet. "Only one percent of our country actually serves, which is incredible because we meet you guys every day on the road," said Dierks. "We're so honored by your service and sacrifice and all you do."

Sergeant Sparks and his wife have been married for two years and have a baby. Chad, a member of the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, is preparing for his second deployment to Afghanistan. During his first deployment, Chad suffered an injury when a live round exploded on top of a striker vehicle. "We were on top of our striker and a bullet that had been left around . . . that had not gone off . . . basically exploded on top of the vehicle," said Chad. "It cut through my hand and cut off the index finger on my right hand. . . . I've regained all my strength in my hand. I can use my hand fully to the ability I was able to use it now."

After pulling out the large $50,000 check and presenting it onstage, Dierks was met with tears and hugs from the couple. Dierks later performed his current single, "Home," the title cut of his new album, which is currently sitting at the top of the Billboard country albums chart.
