Some families are more musical than others—like the one Dave Cobb assembled for his new concept album, Southern Family, which drops on March 18.

Bringing big names like Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown and Chris Stapleton together with acclaimed artists like Jason Isbell, Anderson East and Brandy Clark, the project is full of custom-written songs about growing up in the South, all delivered in the rootsy, back-to-basics sound Dave used as producer of Chris’ CMA award- and Grammy award-winning album, Traveller.

During a preview of the project held in RCA’s historic Studio B, the Georgia native talked about each track, explaining that Jamey Johnson wrote about his mother’s kitchen table, while Zac sings about his grandmother’s garden and Miranda reminds listeners to love the only family they’ll ever have on “Sweet By and By.”

Dave said he wanted Miranda on the album all along, but he didn’t initially ask her because he thought she was too famous. She sought him out at a party to set the record straight: “‘I heard about your stupid album,’” Dave recalls Miranda saying. “‘What? I’m not cool enough for the cool kids?’”
