As the lengthy run for Craig Campbell’s single “Outta My Head” on the Billboard Country Airplay chart became more and more improbable, Brandon Kinney, one of the song’s writers, decided to put away his razor: He refused to shave his beard for the life of the single.

“I don’t know if it started out as a superstitious thing, but Brandon said he’s not going to cut his beard until we are done with the song,” Craig said. “But I don’t think he expected us to go a full year!”

Nor did Brandon’s wife. “His wife is ready for the song be over,” Craig said with a laugh.

Ultimately, “Outta My Head” entered the Top 15 for Craig—his second single to do so—and spent 54 weeks on the Billboard chart. That distinction qualifies it as the second longest-charting single in Billboard’s history, behind Lee Brice’s “Love Like Crazy” at 56 weeks.

To celebrate the song’s journey, Craig sharpened up his scissors to snip Brandon’s beard during Craig’s StageIt show last night (Oct. 28), a performance in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
