Every once in a while you run into a singer here in Nashville who just blows you away, an artist who can create sound in an effortless manner and transport your soul out of this world. This morning that someone proved to be Chris Stapleton.

You may be familiar with Chris as the onetime lead singer for bluegrass band The SteelDrivers, as well as a songwriter. He has written a number of hits for some of country’s biggest stars, including Kenny Chesney (“Never Wanted Nothing More”), George Strait (“Love's Gonna Make It Alright”), Darius Rucker (“Come Back Song”) and Josh Turner (“Your Man”).

But Chris is now making a run at a solo career. Friday (June 7) during CMA Music Festival, Chris held an intimate gathering in downtown Nashville for a few of us media folk. We brunched, we chatted and we were treated to an acoustic performance by Chris himself. He started out playing his new single, “What Are You Listening To,” and right then I was hooked. You can’t help but not be. His voice was as smooth as silk and his soulful sound just hit me in the gut.

After treating us to his version of Josh Turner’s “Your Man,” he began playing a song that he co-wrote with Dan Wilson (Semisonic) called “The Right Ones.” Trust me when I tell you, if you like soulful country music, Chris Stapleton is “Your Man.”

Chris will be out and about this week during CMA Music Fest and will perform “What Are You Listening To” today (June 7) at the Bud Light Stage at Bridgestone Arena Plaza. Catch him if you can.

“It’s such an honor to be playing at CMA Music Fest as we are in the middle of introducing my first single to country radio,” Chris says. “I’m getting such great feedback from the fans who are getting to hear it out on the road, and I look forward to getting home to Nashville and playing it there, too.”

Chris is currently finishing up his debut album, with “What Are You Listening To” set to hit radio next week.
