Billy Ray Cyrus on the Set

Billy Ray Cyrus was in front of the cameras this week outside Nashville, filming a new movie called, appropriately enough, Like a Country Song. Billy Ray visited with Country Weekly on the set of one of the locations, Kimbro's Cafe, in the historic town of Franklin, Tenn., to talk about the film and his character of a broken-down country singer, Bo Reeson.

"It's the ultimate story of redemption," Billy Ray tells Country Weekly. "I loved this story from the beginning."

The movie centers around Bo, his son Jake, played by Joel Smallbone of the Christian recording duo For King & Country, and some unexpected challenges in their lives. Young Jake's promising singing career is at a crossroads as his ego becomes inflated and an old flame re-enters the picture.

"What turned me on to this," Billy Ray says, "was the chance to do some real acting again."

Billy Ray has starred in several films, as well as the television shows Doc, 18 Wheels of Justice and the popular Disney series Hannah Montana with daughter Miley.

Billy Ray also sings the film's title song for the soundtrack. "It's a really great country song," Billy Ray says. "That is my roots. I'm a country music singer and it's great to be given that type of song to sing." Whether the song will be released as a single has not been determined at this point.

Like a Country Song features fellow artists Larry Gatlin and Deborah Allen in supporting roles. The film, slated for release later this year, makes use of several Music City hot spots, including The Listening Room Cafe, The Station Inn and other locales.
