Band Perry Feels “Weight of the Opportunity” on New Album

The trio is working with producer Rick Rubin.

The Band Perry is inarguably one of the hardest-working trios in the business. In addition to performing at Nashville's CMA Music Festival this week, band member Kimberly Perry co-hosted CMA Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock, which will air in September, with Luke Bryan, and the trio is in the studio working on the follow-up to their platinum-selling debut album, which spawned the No. 1 Billboard country hits "If I Die Young" and "All Your Life."

For their sophomore release, they are working with producer Rick Rubin, who produced Johnny Cash's American Recordings project, as well as five subsequent albums: Unchained, Solitary Man, The Man Comes Around, A Hundred Highways and Ain't No Grave. "We're just wearing Rick out asking questions about that process," Kimberly told reporters before performing at CMA Music Fest on Friday (June 8). "I heard a story that they actually took communion together every day that they were recording. [Johnny] seemed like an amazing spiritual guy, an amazing lyricist, and Bruce Springsteen said my favorite quote about Johnny Cash. He said, 'He was the the perfect blend of the social consciousness of folk music, the stories of country and the rebellion of rock 'n' roll.'"

The trio says they do feel the responsibility of creating a superb follow-up project. "I think because we feel the weight of the opportunity," says Kimberly. "I know there are folks who work as hard or harder than we do every day to stand on these stages night after night, I think it's the weight of that responsibility. We want to keep earning it. The three of us are very goal-oriented, too, so we want to outdo ourselves time and time again and just work hard to bring the best music that we can."

The trio gave fans a tidbit from the next album when they performed at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium earlier in the year, and performed a few songs from their upcoming album, including "Night Gone Wasted." "What I'm excited in particular about on that song, 'Night Gone Wasted' has got a really, really country melody with some rock 'n' roll electric guitars," says Kimberly, "which in our opinion is the best combination."
