Moneyland

∗ ∗ ∗ ½

Moneyland responds to Americans’ growing economic unease with a collection of songs addressing the challenges of such times. A clutch of new recordings from the Del McCoury Band serves to tie together previously released tracks by artists ranging from Patty Loveless to Bruce Hornsby. The mood is often dark, but a closing all-star cover of Bernard “Slim” Smith’s “Breadline Blues 1932” offers one prescription: Vote away those blues/The breadline blues. Incidentally, Moneyland also testifies to Merle Haggard’s status as the go-to guy for songs about money-squeezed regular folks—he wrote four of the songs included here.
