Keeping Up With the Joneses—On a Motorcycle (1995)
George Jones and his wife, Nancy, will climb aboard their new, black Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic June 3 and do good while they're having fun.
As grand marshals of the Run for the Sun/Ride for Life motorcycle ride, they will lead thousands of motorcycle and country music enthusiasts in the annual fundraiser that kicks off Fan Fair week and benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Kix Brooks, Ronnie Dunn, Steve Earle, David Lee Murphy and a number of surprise guest bikers will try to keep up with the Joneses.
To officially launch the project, George and Nancy invited MDA goodwill ambassadors Dave and Daniel Hainline to visit their home and take a ride on the new bike. Dave and Daniel have been diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the deadliest form of the disease.
The event's planner, Nashville's 98 WSIX-FM air personality Carl P. Mayfield, is excited. “We are thrilled to have George and Nancy involved,” he says. “The Ride for Life has always attracted great country stars like Alan Jackson, Brother Phelps, Billy Ray Cyrus and BlackHawk, but George Jones is truly a legend. His involvement is a great stamp of approval from all the Harley enthusiasts in country music.”
Will George sing at the concert? “We hope to squeeze a number or two out of him, and maybe a rehearsal out of Brooks & Dunn, who will be performing at the Starwood Amphitheater later that evening.”
The shindig which begins at Nashville Tech and ends at Hermitage Landing Beach on Percy Priest Lake and is open to the public at $25 a Carl-Load.
“A Carl-Load means as many people that can pack into anything that rolls,” Carl P. Mayfield says with a big laugh. “That means a cattle truck, a dump truck, a bus—whatever. It’s a terrific opportunity for people attending Fan Fair to enjoy a day at the beach and a great concert, and at the same time be able to do something for people with muscular dystrophy.”
