Crystal Shawanda: Dawn of a New Day

Crystal Shawanda

Dawn of a New Day

∗ ∗ ½

Crystal Shawanda’s fascinating background promises a fresh musical mixture—born a member of the Ojibwa tribe on the Wikwemikong Indian Reserve in Canada, her family fell in love with country music thanks to the radio airwaves that carried the Grand Ole Opry to them from 800 miles south. But you’d never guess any of that from hearing her debut, which does its best to fit Crystal into a cookie-cutter contemporary country mold. The Tanya Tucker-ish growl in her voice lends Dawn of a New Day some personality—enough to hope it gets framed a little more interestingly next time around.
