Great Cakes: Buttercream Frosting
1207 Villa Place
Nashville, TN 37212
Teams of stars and top cake designers got together to create the ultimate “song cakes” to benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation, a leading center for cancer, leukemia and AIDS research.
Julie Roberts, her mom Sandra and cake designing expert Martin Howard from New York took home the Best of Show award, judged by Nashville pastry chef Juanita Lane of Dulce Desserts and members of the media. Here’s Juanita with more of her observations on the competition along with some cake decorating talk.
CW: Cake decorating seems to be taking on a life of its own.
JL: It is becoming an art. It’s really with the advent of the Food Network and the popularity of their cake decorating contests. People have become fascinated with it.
CW: How did this competition in Nashville work out overall?
JL: I think it went very well. You don’t know if the cake experts are just going to take over and not let the country stars help. And how serious are the stars going to be? But I have to tell you, the stars were so competitive. They were really taking an active part in this. I was watching as Eddie Montgomery (of Montgomery Gentry) was making sure that everything was cleaned up between processes—that’s the sign of a true chef.
